I had the oddest day at work yesterday... two new people started working in our company and when I came back from lunch one of them was put beside me, this is not an unusual event, and I don't mind new people listening on my conversations, but this one was kind of different, since he's the son of one of our coaches (teamleaders). Still, I didn't treat the guy any different then I treat others, my coach and mate Willy (aka Kilroy, aka Max) came to sit with us and we were just discussing some things from work and kind of making fun of our manager. I had an simulation call too, which I fully screwed up since I misunderstood the point, I thought the simulation was an entire simulation, with created faults on the line and the ADSL connection, so I didn't understand the thing and the woman who did the simulation kind of got frustrated (not good, not good...), so I ended up sending her a technician for the price of 128 euros, which I didn't tell her, good thing I didn't put the appointment through or I'd have made it even worse.
Anyway, so the guy's training wasn't that helpful for him, he'd heard me handle about 7 calls, one where neither him nor me understood the customers language, so I struggled through the conversation with him next to me trying not to laugh, which made it even harder to concentrate.
Then, out of the blue, Steven, our mangager, decided to come and sit with us for a wee talk. Thing is that I kind of get along great with the guy, mostly on a personal level, he's the kind of guy I could sit in a pub with for hours and not get bored or out of topics for even a second. I know a lot of personal stuff about him as well. I started about me screwing up the simulation call, and he wouldn't believe me. He then said, not minding my colleagues listening in on our conversation, "I bet you get 90% when you're at your worst, while others get 70% at their best." (ok, that felt good, but a bit awkward towards my colleagues, it's like being the teachers pet) it even got worse... we started discussing the jobinfo, because I've been told that there'll be some vacancies in another department, and some people working there would really like me to get that job, one of them a union worker... Steven then said: "what makes you think I'll let you go that easily?" and then he tried to convince me to not settle for less than a teamleaders or managers function... which fully pissed off some of my colleagues
OK, I'm the teachers pet, worse even, because my companionship with Willy was already pissing people off, but now they've seen that I kind of have one with the manager too...
Hmm, can't wait to go to work on Monday...

weird that he's making it that obvious and public to talk about your career with you, but I agree with him... you definitely have the potential for a leading role (and it's about time too that someone's offering), but i'm not sure it's worth it if it antagonises all your colleagues :(
i admit i had to laugh a bit about your screwed up simulation call though :) i guess we've all been there at some point.
